Setting the tone for your game day experience starts before you even step foot in the stadium. Some might argue that team spirit begins at the tailgate, but any true fan knows that you must always pre-game the pre-game. Here are some tips to help curate the perfect playlist to get you and your friends fired up for the big game in front of you!
When it comes to your playlist, don’t be a people pleaser. Your core group of friends may be able to jam out equally as hard to Beyonce as they do to Shania Twain, but switching quickly back and forth between the two types of music doesn’t allow anyone enough time to get into the game day groove. If you try to make everyone happy by doing a hybrid of each person’s favorite artist, it’s going to get awkward. Go with the majority and then really kill it from there!
If you still want to add a little country and pop hits to grace your game day, do an ombré effect! Fade one genre into the other with crossover artists like Taylor Swift & Sam Hunt, or songs that feature both country and pop stars like “Setting the World on Fire,” by Kenny Chesney ft. Pink and “Without a Fight,” by Brad Paisley ft. Demi Lovato!
Making a playlist is no easy task, so most people tend to stop after about 30 songs and call it good. Believe it or not, that’s no where near enough songs! Even though 30 songs equals about an hour and forty-five minutes worth of music, you’re forgetting the DJ effect. Most people only listen to the first minute of a song. So, you’ve just taken your playing-time down to about 30 minutes… and we all know it takes you longer than that to be fully ready for game day!
We suggest around 60-80 songs for the perfect pre-game amount of music. A great place to start is the “Top Hits” section, then add in throwbacks from there. If you’re not very picky when it comes to your tunes and just want the job done, check out this playlist on Spotify - click here!
Everyone loves a good throwback song. Most people know the words to sing along and it takes you back to good memories. Do your research! A good phrase to google is, “top songs of ___,” then pick years that were significant to you and your friends – junior high, high school, freshmen year of college, etc. Just like a well prepared meal, throwbacks should be sprinkled in as seasoning to make the meat of your playlist stand above the rest.
Anyone can turn on the radio and just let that play. Although we definitely suggest borrowing from top hits lists, don’t make your playlist a repeat of the radio minus commercials. Top hits are great to have at the beginning of your playlist in order to get people in the music mood, but use less and less as the selection goes on.
This is an optional tip, but one we all strongly recommend. Has someone ever handed you the aux cord, and you started playing some fire tunes on your Pandora, Spotify, or iTunes account, when all the sudden an ad starts to play and you lose your music privileges? Nothing screams “Rookie” more than not having a premium account of some kind. It’s usually only a few dollars a month and totally worth it during tailgate season.
Be the go-to music girl and make yourself an invaluable part of gameday!
